Steamboat Era Beginnings (1860s–1900s)

In 1868, Excelsior earned its name—Latin for “ever upward”—with the arrival of the sidewheel steamboat Onota. Paddlewheel commerce linked Minneapolis with the lake’s western shore. This brought tourists, mail, and goods to the area. The Excelsior & Minnetonka Steamboat Company quickly ran daily excursions. The town’s docks buzzed with visitors in straw hats and parasols, all eager to experience the lake.

Transformative Tourism

The arrival of the Onota marked a turning point for Excelsior. It transformed the area into a bustling destination. Visitors flocked to the lake’s beauty. They enjoyed idyllic settings and celebrated leisurely days by the water. This marked the beginning of a long-lasting love affair between Excelsior and its guests.

Turn-of-the-Century Charm

By 1900, Excelsior’s Main Street was thriving. It boasted hotels like the Hotel Delaware and charming summer cottages nestled among pine groves. Dance halls and bandstands flourished at Simpson’s Park. Families gathered there for picnics while local orchestras played delightful ragtime tunes. Sailing races became seasonal highlights. I still chase the ghost of those bright-colored sloop regattas on tranquil mornings.

Social Gatherings and Entertainment

The turn of the century brought people together. Residents and visitors reveled in the lively atmosphere. Local events fostered friendships and community ties. These gatherings were essential to Excelsior's identity.

Mid-Century Rebirth

The Great Depression and World War II slowed lake tourism significantly. However, the post-war boom breathed new life into Excelsior in the 1950s. New marinas and restaurants flourished, and the South Lake Minnetonka Historical Society helped preserve that classic Main Street look. I love sharing with my guests how historic streetcars once traversed the lake on rails to bustling downtown Excelsior.

Economic Revival

The revival during the mid-20th century was remarkable. Newly built establishments catered to a growing population. This period marked a turning point where Excelsior embraced its heritage. It set a course for a bright future filled with potential.

Modern Lakeside Lifestyle

Today, Excelsior is a beautiful blend of heritage and modern amenities. Visitors can explore boutique shops, farmers markets, and craft breweries at the old train depot. Lakeside events, such as the Ice Palace in winter and Jazz on the Beach in summer, offer something for everyone. Cruising past the historic water tower or anchoring off Landmark Center, I remind guests that Excelsior’s soul lives in every dock pilaster and Victorian porch.

Year-Round Attractions

Excelsior has become a year-round destination. The vibrant community hosts various events that celebrate culture and togetherness. From winter festivities to summer concerts, there’s always something happening. This sense of community enhances the town’s charm and makes it an inviting place for visitors.

The Legacy of Excelsior

So next time you board “Play Time” for your private charter, remember you’re gliding through layers of lake history. The story of Excelsior is found in the gentle lapping at the pilings and the welcoming smiles on Main Street. I can’t wait to share more of these lakeside tales on your cruise!

Excelsior’s past continues to shape its vibrant present. Each visit is a chance to experience a legacy that spans generations. Embrace the history, charm, and community spirit of this enchanting lakeside village.

Let’s celebrate the beauty of Excelsior together!
